The term bioplastics covers an entire family of materials that are biobased, biodegradable or both. Biobased means that the material or product comes wholly or partly from biomass, that is, from the plant kingdom. Biomass for bioplastics comes mainly from corn, sugar cane or cellulose.
The term "biodegradable" refers to a chemical process when microorganisms in the environment break down the material to its natural substances, such as water, carbon dioxide and compost (artificial additives are not required). The degradation process depends on the surrounding environment (where and what temperature), on the material and on how the material is used.
Of course, materials and products may have both characteristics, but that is not self-evident. Biobased should not be biodegradable automatically.
Biobased polymers already play an important role in packaging, agriculture, gastronomy, consumer electronics and the automotive industry to name just a few areas, and have been used for a long period of time to produce short-lived products, such as films, catering products, packaging and waste bags. As technology evolves, more and more persistent products are also made of these materials. Examples are parts of keyboards, cell phone covers and some parts of the automotive industry.
Biobased polymers are driving the development in the plastic industry. There are two major benefits of bio-based plastics compared with the traditional ones. They save on fossil resources and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Biodegradability is an added benefit in some of the bioplastics.
